Majlis Apresiasi Watan (MAW) is the official orientation week for UKM students, and it was filled with memorable experiences. Here are some of the highlights:
Throughout MAW, there were numerous activities that I truly enjoyed. On the first day, we were introduced to the organizational structure of our college, Kolej Aminuddin Baki (KAB). We also learned several cheers that we would use during Perang Dectar, including:
"Aminnn cuak tak? Cuak, cuak, cuak, tak cuak, tak cuak. Takut, takut, takut, tak takut, tak takut. Gentar, gentar, tak gentar, tak gentar. Amin tak cuak, Amin tak takut, Amin tak gentar! Hu ha hu haha singkalasi kasi kasi, singkalasi kasi, Amin, Aminuddin Baki!"
One of the special moments during MAW was the visit from the Minister of Higher Education, Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir. We had the opportunity to listen to his inspiring journey and the challenges he overcame to reach where he is today. There was also a session with UKM alumni, where they shared their experiences, which served as a great source of motivation for us.
Another significant event was the MegaFit Batik Night, where all participants wore batik to set a new record in the Malaysia Book of Records for the Most Participants Wearing Batik in an Aerobic Program category. It was an incredible sight to see so many people dressed in traditional attire while engaging in a fitness activity.
We also had a deeply moving event called Malam Selawat: UKM Bersama Palestin. The atmosphere that night was peaceful and solemn as we collectively recited selawat and expressed solidarity with Palestine. It was a moment of reflection and unity.
One of the most intense activities was Perang Dectar, where each college passionately chanted their cheers, competing to be the loudest and most spirited. Traditionally, the last college standing inside DECTAR would win, but this year, all participants had to leave by midnight, unlike previous years when they stayed much longer.
The final day of MAW was particularly emotional as we took the UKM student pledge. When the Vice-Chancellor declared, "Andalah pewaris watan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia," I felt a deep sense of pride and responsibility. It was a powerful moment, marking the beginning of our journey as UKM students.
Overall, I genuinely enjoyed MAW, but amidst all the excitement, I carried a heavy heart knowing that my maternal grandfather was battling his illness back home. I felt a deep sense of guilt for not being by his side during his most difficult time, making my experience bittersweet.
